ॐ गं गणपतये नमः
Complete Guide to Vidhi, Mantras, Story & Benefits

Significance of Ganesh Puja

Ganesh Puja, also known as Ganpati Pooja, is the worship of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity who is revered as the remover of obstacles, the god of wisdom, intellect, and new beginnings. In Hindu tradition, no auspicious work begins without first worshipping Lord Ganesha. His blessings ensure success, prosperity, and the removal of all hurdles.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, celebrated with great fervor, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. However, Ganesh Puja can be performed any day with devotion. The rituals, mantras, and offerings create a divine connection that brings peace, clarity, and material abundance to the devotee's life.

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

"O Lord with the curved trunk and mighty body, whose splendor equals a million suns, please remove all obstacles from my endeavors always."

How Ganesh Puja is Performed

Performing Ganesh Puja requires sincerity, cleanliness, and devotion. While elaborate rituals exist, a simple puja done with faith is equally powerful. Here is a step-by-step guide:

1

Purification: Take a bath, wear clean clothes (preferably red or yellow), and cleanse the puja area with Gangajal.

2

Install the Idol: Place a Ganesha idol or picture on a clean platform. If using a clay idol, you may perform Pran Pratistha (invoking life) with mantras.

3

Offerings (Upachara): Offer 16 items (Shodashopachara) including: Durva grass (21 blades), red flowers, modak or laddus, sandalwood paste, kumkum, incense, lamp, and naivedya (food).

4

Chant Mantras: Recite Ganesh mantras (see next section) 108 times using a rudraksha mala.

5

Aarti: Conclude with Ganesh Aarti (like "Sukhakarta Dukhaharta" or "Jai Ganesh Deva").

6

Visarjan or Prayer: If the idol is temporary, perform visarjan (immersion) respectfully. For permanent idols, pray for forgiveness and conclude.

Note:

Do not offer Tulsi leaves to Ganesha. Use Durva grass (three-bladed) which is most beloved to him.

The Sacred Story of Ganesh Puja

According to the Shiva Purana, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the sandalwood paste she used for her bath. She breathed life into him and assigned him to guard her door while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned, Ganesha, unaware of who he was, denied him entry. Enraged, Shiva severed his head.

Seeing Parvati's grief, Shiva promised to bring Ganesha back to life. He sent his ganas to bring the head of the first living creature they found facing north. They returned with the head of an elephant. Shiva placed it on Ganesha's body and restored him to life, granting him the boon that he would be worshipped before all deities in any ritual.

Thus, Ganesh Puja became the foremost ritual. Another popular legend from the Ganesh Chaturthi tradition speaks of the 21-day penance performed by a boy named Gana, who pleased Lord Ganesha and received the boon of walking again, establishing the power of dedicated Ganesh worship.

"From that day onward, whoever performs Ganesh Puja with pure devotion will have all obstacles removed and their righteous desires fulfilled." — Shiva Purana
