In Vedic Astrology, the primary birth chart (also known as the Rashi Chart or D-1 chart) provides a general overview of a person's life. It is calculated based on the position of planets at the moment of birth. There are 12 signs, and each one rises on the eastern horizon for approximately two hours. This means that hundreds, if not thousands, of people born within that two-hour window in the same region will have the same ascendant sign and a nearly identical D-1 chart.
Despite having the same foundational chart, these individuals do not share the same destiny. Their careers, marital lives, health, and fortunes are all different. Not even twins, who share an almost identical birth time and place, follow the same life path. This disparity in destiny, despite a similar birth chart, is a key puzzle in astrology.
All divisional charts originate from the natal birth chart (D-1). The calculation is based on the precise degrees of the ascendant and the nine planets in the D-1 chart. The rising degrees of the ascendant determine the ascendant of all divisional charts. Similarly, the exact planetary degrees of the nine planets in the D-1 chart dictate their position and sign in each of the divisional charts.
There are a total of 20 different types of divisional charts, which are used to analyze specific areas of life in a horoscope. Sages have categorized these into four primary schemes, which are studied together for a comprehensive analysis.

This is the main birth chart. It provides a general overview of a person's life, including their personality, physical body, and overall destiny. All other divisional charts are derived from it, serving as the foundation for all further astrological analysis.
The Hora chart is specifically for analyzing matters of wealth, financial prosperity, & material possessions. It sheds light on how a person accumulates and manages resources throughout their life, indicating potential sources of income and financial stability.A strong indication in both the main birth chart and the relevant divisional chart reinforces a prediction. For example, a strong yoga for wealth in both the Rasi (\(D-1\)) and the Hora (\(D-2\)) charts confirms a period of financial prosperity.
This chart reveals information about a person's siblings, courage, and personal efforts. It can provide insights into relationships with brothers and sisters and highlight an individual's overall stamina, drive, and willpower to face challenges.
This divisional chart focuses on children..Focuses on children, fertility, and creative projects. The Saptamsha Chart, also called the D7 Chart, is one among these divisional charts, and it specifically relates to children, creativity, and a native's relationships with their offspring
Considered one of the most important divisional charts, the Navamsa is a crucial tool for assessing marriage, relationships, and the true strength of the planets in the main birth chart. It shows the deeper, more subtle influences on a person's life and destiny.
The Dwadasamsa chart is used to understand parental lineage and inheritance. It provides insights into familial karma and the influences passed down through generations.
This divisional chart focuses on misfortunes, challenges, health issues, and karmic difficulties. It is used to analyze adversities and unfavorable events in life, helping to understand and prepare for potential obstacles.D-30, or Trimsamsa, charts in astrology are divisional charts used to examine the "shadow self" and karmic patterns related to health, misfortunes, and deeply ingrained issues from past lives. Unlike the general Rashi chart, the D-30 chart provides specific insights into chronic illnesses, accidents, hidden weaknesses, and subconscious patterns that influence a native's ability to overcome suffering or experience persistent difficulties. Astrologers use this chart to understand why certain challenges arise and to identify potential solutions by analyzing the placement of the Lagna lord, the 8th house (diseases/debts), and other benefic and malefic influences.
Treat all divisional charts as a normal birth chart. Apply all standard astrological rules, including aspects, yogas, Raja Yoga, and Dhanyoga. The greater the number of auspicious yogas (like GajaKesari Yoga), the stronger the divisional chart will be, leading to excellent results in its related life area. For example, a **Raja Yoga in D-12** indicates wealthy parents, while a **Dhanyoga** there suggests loving and caring parents. The effects of these yogas operate throughout life, but their strongest results are felt during the dasha (planetary period) of the planets involved.
The placement of planets in the houses of a divisional chart is crucial.
Sage Parashara advised that an astrologer should analyze planets through these Vargas before making significant predictions. By looking at how planets are placed in these various divisions, an astrologer can gain a comprehensive understanding of a person's potential for wealth, family happiness, career success, and overall well-being. Divisional charts are the soul of astrology, they allow us to dissect a horoscope at a very minute level and brings wonderful results which are not possible by using natal chart alone. If not all, at least divisional charts like drekkana(d-3), navamsa(d-9) and dashamsa(d-10) should be analyzed and mastered properly because they deal with important life affairs, have higher Vimposhak bala and have a major say in results of dasha, without them astrology is incomplete.
