Sept 26 – Oct 10, 2026 16 Days Ancestral Rites

🕉️ What is Pitru Paksha? Meaning & Significance

Pitru Paksha (literally "Fortnight of the Ancestors") is a 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to honoring departed ancestors. It falls during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, typically in September or October.

During this sacred period, Hindus perform rituals like Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan to express gratitude, seek forgiveness, and help departed souls attain peace and liberation from the cycle of birth and death. It is believed that during Pitru Paksha, the ancestors (Pitrus) visit the earthly realm to bless their descendants who honor them .

Pitru Paksha is not a period of mourning — it is a period of remembrance, gratitude, and spiritual connection. It reminds us to honor those who came before us and to continue the chain of legacy through which we received our life. The primary way of honoring ancestors is through Tarpan (water offerings) and Shradh (offering of food, specifically sesame seeds, rice, and water). These rituals are usually performed by the eldest son or another male relative on the specific Tithi (lunar day) of the ancestor's death.

📖 The Story of Shraddha: Origin & Significance

The Legend of Shraddha

The concept of Shraddha finds its origin in Hindu mythology. When Lord Vishnu incarnated as the dwarf Brahmin Vamana, he approached the demon king Bali during a yagna. Impressed by Bali's generosity, Vamana asked for three steps of land. Bali granted it. Vamana then expanded to cover the entire universe in two steps, and for the third step, Bali offered his own head. Pleased, Vamana blessed Bali with immortality and the lordship of Patala (the netherworld), granting him the boon that he would be worshipped during Pitru Paksha.

Another story involves Karna, the great warrior of the Mahabharata. After his death in the Kurukshetra war, his soul reached heaven, but he was served only gold and jewels instead of food. Confused, Karna asked Lord Indra why. Indra replied that although Karna had donated gold and jewels generously during his life, he had never offered food and water to his ancestors through Shraddha. Karna realized his mistake and was granted a 15-day leave to return to earth and perform Shraddha for his ancestors. This period came to be known as Pitru Paksha .

These stories teach that honoring ancestors through Shraddha is not just a ritual — it is a sacred duty (dharma) that ensures the spiritual welfare of both the departed and the living. It reminds us that we are part of a continuous chain of life, and honoring those who came before us keeps that chain unbroken [citation:17].
